An H1 subtype-specific indirect ELISA was used to determine the prevalence of influenza A virus antibodies in a random selection of bovine sera (n=2345) submitted to the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory between May 1993 and April 1994. The serum samples were obtained from cattle suffering from respiratory disease and/or abortion. 27% of the samples tested were positive, 31% were low-positive and 42% were negative. The antibody prevalence appeared to peak during September-November and then again from February to March. A subset of the samples was examined by haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test to confirm the ELISA results. A 92% correlation was found between the ELISA and HI assay. Western blot analysis on a subset of ELISA positive sera (n=50) confirmed the presence of antibodies to the nucleoprotein and H1 haemagglutinin protein of influenza A virus.
