A comparative study of spironolactone and hydroflumethiazide alone and together in the treatment of hypertension

Hydroflumethiazide and spironolactone were given separately and in combination to eight hypertensive patients in a double-blind trial. High blood pressure was lowered approximately equally following hydroflumethiazide alone and spironolactone alone. When the preparations combined in a single tablet were taken twice daily, there was an additive reduction in high blood pressure. The combined single tablet alone or as adjunct to other hypotensive agents could be safely used in the treatment of moderate and severe high blood pressure. The hypokalaemia, alkalosis, hypernatraemia and glucose intolerance associated during hydroflumethiazide alone was not observed following spironolactone alone nor during the combined single tablet administration. It appears therefore that by the use of such combined single tablet prescription a significant reduction in the dose and side effects may be obtained.
