A comparative trial of six day therapy with clotrimazole and nystatin in pregnant patients with vaginal candidiasis

Pregnant patients suffering from candida vaginitis confirmed by culture were treated for six days with either one 100 mg clotrimazole pessary or two 100,000 i.u. nystatin pessaries. Patients were reviewed one and five weeks after the end of therapy. The number of patients with symptoms and signs of vaginitis was reduced by both preparations, the number with discharge being reduced significantly more by clotrimazole than by nystatin (P<0.01). Both one week and five weeks after treatment, the number of patients from whom candida could be isolated on culture was significantly less amongst those treated with clotrimazole. Both treatments were well tolerated without side effects, and neither appeared to influence the course of pregnancy. No in vitro resistance to either preparation was found before, during or after treatment.
