After an overnight fast male albino rats were starved or given 4.39 g alpha -starch or 2.01 g butter at 12-h intervals for 3 days. Total N and urea excreted in urine and plasma urea were estimated. Some of the rats were killed at day 5 and carcass nitrogenous fractions and enzyme activities in liver and rate of proteolysis in diaphragm muscle were estimated.
