Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis in AIDS patients

The clinical records of 12 HIV-positive patients (9 men, 3 women; aged 18-44 years) from Cuba, with Histoplasma capsulatum infection confirmed by histopathological studies were reviewed. All patients presented with fever and wasting, with hepatomegaly and generalized adenopathy. More than 50 % of the patients had anaemia and an accelerated erythrosedimentation rate. Chest X-rays showed pulmonary lesions in 50% of patients and abdominal ultrasound demonstrated hepatomegaly and splenomegaly in 58.3 and 41.6 % of the patients, respectively.
