Disseminated histoplasmosis in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) : a case report

A case of histoplasmosis is reported in a 27-yr-old HIV-positive woman, who presented with a 4-wk history of productive cough, fever, weight loss and night sweats. Chest X-ray revealed bilateral basal pneumonia. The initial working diagnosis was pulmonary tuberculosis. Bone marrow aspirate revealed a hypercellular marrow with clumps of Histoplasma capsulatum. The patient died 1 wk after admission, before anti-histoplasmosis treatment had been started.
