Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis as seen in adults

The study, described, of 25 adult patients illustrates the diverse manifestations of progressive disseminated histoplasmosis and the difficulties of diagnosis. The progressive nature and serious prognostic import are revealed by the followup of untreated patients with 100% mortality. Amphotericin B therapy, when instigated early, was highly effective in reducing mortality; of 14 patients who received adequate dosage, only 1 died as a result of histoplasmosis.
