The birds described in NAR 43, 328 were killed. Cholesterol increased and elastase decreased the elastolytic activity of the aortic wall. The high-carbohydrate basal diet induced thrombotic formations in the large veins of the liver and lymphomonocytic infiltration of their walls which in birds given cholesterol extended to the surrounding parenchyma; birds given elastase had intact parenchyma. Similar findings affected the kidneys. In liver and aorta elastase inhibited deposition of lipid in the lesions.
