Cultivation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from SIVmac-infected rhesus monkeys or HIV-1-infected human subjects in the presence of cytotoxic T lymphocyte epitopes and recombinant interleukin 15 (IL-15) led to the expansion of HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes. This rIL-15 driven expansion and maturation of CTLs was not only independent of IL-2 but was also not mediated by the IL-2 receptor.
