Since 1968 neonatal screening for the detection of phenylketonuria and other disorders of amino acid metabolism has been performed all over Belgium. In the province of Limburg 81,324 newborn infants have been tested; 8 cases of phenylketonuria and 3 other inborn errors have been discovered. Besides his preventive purpose mass screening for hereditary metabolic diseases has to contribute to the scientific and epidemiologic knowledge of these rare affections.
