Nicardipine and nifedipine in the treatment of essential arterial hypertension

The present trial has shown that in essential hypertension, nicardipine (30 mg tid) is as effective in lowering arterial pressure as nifedipine (10 mg tid). However, nicardipine treatment had fewer side effects and the tachycardia reflex was not observed as in the nifedipine group. This phenomenon could be explained because nicardipine has the ability to block the release of norepinephrine from cardiac sympathetic nerve endings, as demonstrated by Kabela et al.
