Ionophore antibiotic (narasin) poisoning in rabbits

In outbreaks of narasin poisoning in several commercial rabbit farms in Parana State, Brazil, about 5000 of 35 000 rabbits died after eating a pelleted diet to which poultry premix had been added. Clinical signs included apathy, anorexia, muscle weakness, lameness, diarrhoea, respiratory distress and opisthotonus. Gross findings were unremarkable but varying degrees of degeneration, necrosis and regeneration of skeletal muscles were consistent histopathological findings in affected rabbits. The disease was reproduced by feeding the suspected diet and by dosing rabbits with narasin by mouth.
