Administration of an attenuated live-virus (TC-83) Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis vaccine protected horses and donkeys against challenge with virulent virus. A single transient increase of body temperature was the only sign observed in vaccinated animals, and this occurred in only half of the animals responding immunologically. Viraemias below those necessary to infect susceptible mosquitoes were detected in animals from the 1st to the 6th day after vaccination. C.f. and HI antibodies appeared in the serum of all 30 horses studied under controlled experimental conditions. The sero-conversion rate for 157 Mexican horses vaccinated during a vaccination campaign was 96%.
