The perception of malnutrition and hence its possible remedies has changed during the last few decades. Deficiency of dietary energy is a major factor constraining the health and performance of people in many farming situations. Some different rural situations are discussed, emphasizing the seasonal dimension of malnutrition. Malnutrition could, for example, consist of inability to meet peak labour demands because of insufficient food available to balance energy expenditure at that time, or because of body stores insufficiently repleted since the previous working season.
