The 81 malnourished children less than 5 years old, detected in a longitudinal survey of 7493 preschool children in an urban community of Delhi, belonged to families in the lower socio-economic groups, and all the mothers during the antenatal period showed some degree of anaemia. The general feeding pattern was that of prolonged breast feeding up to 1.5 years old, after which the children were weaned on to very dilute milk and inadequate solids.
