A study of L-proline transport in experimntal protein-calorie malnutrition in rats by everted SAC technique

Of 16 weanling rats 8 were controls and the rest were given a protein-deficient diet for 7 to 15 days. Intestinal transport of L-proline was studied in both groups by an everted sac method. The transport rate of L-proline was reduced in the intestines of rats deprived of protein by 60 to 70% of that of the controls. The results indicated that the functional capacity of the small intestine is affected early in protein-calorie deficiency in growing animals. There was no such change in L-proline transport when similar experiments were made with adult rats.
