The incidence rate of pleural mesothelioma in the regions with enterprises for quarrying and enrichment of chrysotile asbestos is higher than the average value for the regions. The majority of patients in this area are either workers with a long work record in asbestos production or residents of the areas adjacent to asbestos plants, who had been living there for decades. Not only amphibole asbestos, but chrysotile ones as well appear to be the risk factors with respect to mesothelioma development. Mesothelioma cases detected within the recent five years may be regarded as the rusult of the adverse effects of high air dust levels during the post-war years, these levels having drastically reduced later.
