The General Hospital Lic. Adolfo Lopez Mateos, of the Institute de Seguridad y Servidos Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado, was selected for this study, which purpose was to analyze the ussefullness of the birth's register procedures, in order to obtain a better knowledge about the immaturity incidence. The information was generally satisfactory and reliable, just in accordance with the discoveries of the Interamerican Investigation of Mortality in Childhood; basically those following: a) All the low-weight newborns (2,500 gr or less), ascend to 11.7%, which, joined to those with deficient weights (33.9% with 2,501 to 3,000 gr), make evidence of the importance of this question on the population studied. b) The low and deficient birth-weight frequency, was higher into the younger mothers: 53.1% of those weights registered in children born from women 20 years or less, was 3,000 gr or less; that is, 10.2% in excess comparativelly with children born from mothers 35 and more. c) On the other side, births in the weight group 3,501-4,000 gr. were of 19.3% into the mothers ranging 35 and more years, too much better than those from mothers 20 years or lessjust 7.8%. Each hospital must know the characteristics of its mother and child population (basically: birth weight, mother's age, and pregnancy order). It is just equally necessary to obtain this information in a national level, designing procedures to eliminate the obstacles represented by the non-hospitalarian births, and improving the quality of the sheets used for vital events registration.
