From June to October 1986 the cumulative HIV seroprevalence in a commercial plasma centre in a low socioeconomic suburb increased from 6.3% to 9.2%. Of the 281 people who donated the antibody-positive units, 62 (22.1%) seroconverted during this period. Only 13% of 54 HIV-seropositive and 15.5% of 58 seronegative donors had any known risk factor for AIDS. The frequency of donation was correlated with the rate of HIV seropositivity. The authors conclude that frequent reuse of disposable blood collection equipment was probably responsible for HIV transmission. Since May 1987 the sale of blood products has been in illegal in Mexico.Hilary Richardson.
