Hypertensive obese patients run an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Their predominantly abdominal obesity is often associated with hypertriglyceridaemia and insulin-resistant diabetes; their cardiovascular status is characterized by cardiac hyperdynamics and hypervolaemia responsible for left ventricular hypertrophy and dilatation. The effects of weight reduction and the physiopathological mechanisms of cardiovascular consequences are discussed.
