Studies in intestinal parasitic disease agents in stools of people in a rural area of Nigeria

Stool samples from 300 patients who had reported at the School of Medical Technology, Vom, Nigeria, from September to November, 1988, were examined for parasites. 127 (42.3%) samples harboured one or more parasites, of which 68 (22.7%) were from male patients and 59 (19.7%) were from females. The parasites identified and their prevalences were: Entamoeba coli (19.0%); Necator americanus (17.0%); Entamoeba histolytica (4.7%); Schistosoma mansoni (3.0%); Giardia lamblia [G. duodenalis] (2.3%); Trichuris trichiura (1.7%); Trichomonas hominis (1.0%); Ascaris lumbricoides (0.7%); Hymenolepis nana (0.3%); Endolimax nana (0.3%); Strongyloides stercoralis (0.23%); Iodamoeba buetschlii (0.3%).
