Pattern of intestinal parasitic infestations in diarrhoeal subjects in a rural community

In Sundarupur, Varanasi district, India, of 1424 individuals aged > 5 years investigated from September 1981 to August 1983, 234 had acute diarrhoea, a prevalence of 164.3/1000. The prevalence was significantly higher (325.6/1000) in the 6- to 19-year-old group than in older persons (71.8/1000). Parasites were found in 79.9% of stool samples examined. The most common parasites isolated from diarrhoeal patients were Ascaris lumbricoides (55.6%), Entamoeba histolytica (23.5%), Giardia lamblia (19.2%) and hookworm (3.4%).
