Jigger infestation in children in a rural area of Rivers State of Nigeria

During a survey in April 1991 to determine the DTP immunization status of 218 children residents in a rural riverine community in Ikuru Town, 49 (22.5%) were found to have been infested with Tunga penetrans. Itching and ulceration were the commonest symptoms. The feet were infested in all children, none of whom was taken to a health facility. 42.9% of infested children had received complete doses of DPT vaccine. Parents reported no complications of flea infestation.
