A soil isolate of actinomycete, strain S-70, revealing presence of plasmid(s) was placed in the genus Streptomyces according to wall composition and morphology. The toxicity of S-70 grown on 2 fermentation media, glucose-asparagine broth (GAB) and malt extract-yeast extract broth (MYE), against infective larvae of T. canis was assessed. The use of a mortality test provided a sensitive and reproducible bioassay, particularly when the S-70 concentration was increased to 500 or 1000 micro g/ml. There was significant superiority of the toxic ability of the products derived from GAB over those derived from MYE. Maximum (100%) mortality, however, occurred at 100, 500 and 1000 micro g/ml after 10 days incubation in either medium. The results suggest high larvicidal activity of the Streptomyces crude products examined and it is believed that they may have potential in reducing the hazard of T. canis infection in man.
