Toxocara canis: an estimation of the incidence of infection in puppies in an industrial town

Toxocara canis eggs were detected in the faeces of 38 (33%) of 114 wormed puppies and in those of 47 (67%) of 70 unwormed puppies in a survey in Oldham, UK. No infection was found in puppies which had been wormed with piperazine citrate at 100 mg/kg given on 2 occasions 10 days apart. Dogs given lower doses of piperazine citrate (50 and 75 mg/kg given once) and those given purgative drugs continued to excrete eggs. It is concluded that ineffective worming by owners and breeders is still prevalent. Although the risk of human infection in the area seems significant, there are only 2 reported human cases in Lancashire.
