Paraplegia (paralysis of both hindlimbs) results from dysfunction of the spinal chord. Differentiation of the causes of the spinal cord damage is made by study of the case history and progress, and by radiographic examination. Determination of the degree and level of the spinal cord damage is made by routine neurological examination in which cord activity below the level of the lesion and cord conduction activity across the lesion are tested. This examination serves to establish the diagnosis and to give an indication of the prognosis in each case. The anatomical basis and the significance of lesions at different levels are discussed.
