In studies with 25 dogs with clinical signs of prostatic disease, the additional diagnostic value of cytological examination of ultrasound-guided thin needle biopsy and catheter biopsy specimens was compared with the findings of routine physical, radiographic, ultrasonographic and histological examination. Nine dogs had prostatic carcinoma, 10 had inflammation of the prostate and 6 had benign prostate disease. In 13 dogs with histological confirmation, cytological examination led to a correct diagnosis in 4 of the 5 cases of carcinoma and 6 of the 8 cases of prostatitis. When follow-up was included for the evaluation of cytology, 5 of 9 with carcinoma were correctly diagnosed by thin-needle biopsy. Combination of thin-needle and suction biopsy led to a correct diagnosis in 8 of 9 dogs with carcinoma.
