The study of demographic behaviour of married people including their attitudes towards family size, marriage, contraceptive preference and their suggestions to run family planning programmes has become very important for obvious reasons. In India, such demographic studies have a long past. In the present paper, an effort has been made to provide salient findings of the demographic field studies conducted in Uttar Pradesh during 1978-85 by the Lucknow Population Research Centre. The studies reveal that, by and large, people are still traditional in terms of their family building aspirations and hence family planning efforts are required to be organised with increased vigour. The future stress of these efforts should be on population education and communication activities as the studies revealed.
