A quasi-experimental study was conducted to determine the effect of group counselling with women on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of their husbands concerning family planning in Zahedan, Iran, in 2002. Forty-four women with 2 or more children who had not used contraceptives were selected by non-probability sampling from 3 health centres. After the women and their husbands had completed the questionnaire and their educational needs had been determined, the women in 5 groups of 8-9 members participated in 3 counselling sessions. The programme was evaluated one month after the intervention using a questionnaire and a checklist. T-paired test showed that the mean knowledge and attitude scores of the women and their husbands before and after the intervention were significantly different. After the intervention, 43% of the cases selected one of the contraceptive methods. It is concluded that the KAP of husbands regarding family planning could be improved by appropriate counselling of women.
