The chapter accounts for changes in the diverse set of production relations characterizing agrarian economies induced by long term increases in population growth and, more specifically, by changes in the relative scarcity of land and labour. The approach pays particular attention to the constraints that arise when market mechanisms for risk diffusion and intertemporal markets are incomplete and information is costly. A broad framework is provided to assist in formalizing a model of the development of agrarian economies.
