This study focusses on land use and land tenure. Some 58% of arable land is irrigated rice fields, 93% of landowners have less than 0.5 ha, usually for families of 5 or more persons. Also 65% of family heads active in agriculture are landless or only own home gardens. Average per caput income (1975) is US$40. 60% of families engaged in agriculture depend on verbal share cropping contracts. Land leasing to sugar plantations constitutes a further burden for a number of farmers in this district.
