The weaning period is important from the nutritional standpoint. The available evidence suggests that perhaps the most appropriate age for introducing supplementary foods is 4 to 6 months. In the conditions prevailing in developing countries introduction of any food other than breast milk is hazardous and care should be taken to ensure that safe weaning foods are given. Emphasis should be laid on low-cost weaning foods based on locally available foods which are within the reach of the rural population.
