Child weaning in Zimbabwe

Chanetsa, J.

Practical considerations for childfeeding in East, Central and Southern African countries Report of a workshop held in Arusha Tanzania, 16-19 December 1981: 55-58

Document Number: 361071
In most rural areas of Zimbabwe mothers continue breast feeding their children after the first year of life; in urban areas children are frequently given artificial feeding formulas, often over-diluted, before 1 year old. Infant weaning food is most likely to be a thin maize porridge that is thickened as the child grows older. A weaning food formulated by the Ministry of Health has been developed based on local ingredients, groundnuts, beans, maize and cooking oil. Processed weaning foods although manufactured in Zimbabwe are very expensive.
