This paper describes 3 new serogroups of T. hyodysenteriae which have been found infecting Australian pigs. Lipopolysaccharide extracted from 3 isolates (Q16, Vic2 and NSW1) submitted for typing would not react in agar gel doubles diffusion precipitation with the typing sera for serogroups A to F. The spirochaetes were confirmed as T. hyodysenteriae by their strong beta -haemolysis on bovine and sheep blood agar, positive indole production and characteristic API-ZYM profile. Antisera prepared in rabbits against all 3 isolates reacted only with lipopolysaccharide from the organisms from which they had been prepared and not with lipopolysaccharide from the type organisms. It is proposed that Q16, Vic2 and NSW 1 be regarded as the type organisms for new serological groups of T. hyodysenteriae G, H and I respectively. Two other isolates belonging to serogroup G have been found but none from the other two groups.
