Typical clinical and pathological signs of dysentery were induced in two conventional pigs, with vitamin E and Se deficiency, by feeding a pure culture of T. hyodysenteriae. The colonic mucosa contained an abundance of spirochaetes (which were absent from rectal swabs before infection) and yielded almost pure cultures of T. hyodysenteriae.
