Analysis of prognostic factors in patients with locally advanced breast cancer treated with intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy as an induction therapy

A retrospective analysis was undertaken on a series of 75 patients with locally advanced breast cancer treated with intraarterial infusion chemotherapy as an induction therapy. Several parameters were tested as to possible prognostic variables. Of these, only histological assessment of local response influenced survival; patients with good histological response had a better prognosis than those with poor response (77% versus 47% survival at 5 years). Thus, histological effect appeared to be an important prognostic factor in this treatment strategy.
