This paper outlines the socioeconomic performance of Subsaharan Africa and highlights the key trends and issues that provide the biggest development challenge for the region. These include: poor economic growth; population growth; poverty; HIV/AIDS; poor levels of agricultural productivity; and environmental degradation. It is suggested that without change in the region's agricultural development strategy, the future outlook for the continent is dismal.
