Yield trends of wheat in india and future prospects

Trends of wheat yield in India since the beginning of the present century have been worked out based on a field experiment comprising the cultivars representative of each decade. Selection pressures towards the yield and its components have been analysed in the light of recent yield increases of the dwarfs. It is brought out that the biomass of talls and dwarfs is largely of the same order, yet the latter give higher yield because of their better partitioning efficiency which is reflected in their higher harvest index. It is suggested that future breeding programmes should aim at increasing the biomass for a major yield improvement. Efforts should also be made to combine kernel weight and test weight per spike at a high level with out losing the grain number for furthering the yield level.
