Avoidable mortality in India: past progress and future prospects

A review is presented discussing the trends in avoidable premature mortality over the past century and discusses future mortality in India. It is divided into 3 parts. The first is a review of the mortality patterns in India in the 20th century in relation to the decline in mortality elsewhere. A discussion of current mortality patterns and variations across states and socioeconomic groups follows. Finally, mortality scenarios of the 1st half of the 21st century are discussed.
