Galactose, galactitol, pyruvate, succinate and propionate (as carbon sources) were effective in stimulating erythromycin synthesis in washed mycelium of S. erythreus. Galactitol, in parallelism with pyruvate and succinate was superior to galactose but lower than propionate in its stimulatory effect. Magnesium sulfate was essential for erythromycin biosynthesis and its optimum level was 0.05%. K2HPO4 in limited concentration (0.01%) was required and 0.5% calcium chloride was optimum to increase the yield. Fresh synthesis of erythromycin by resting cells also occurred in mineral salt medium (without a carbon source).
