Histological examinations were carried out with the gastric biopsy samples of 26 women suffering from Sjogren's syndrome. In 10 of the samples preatrophic or atrophic gastritis was revealed with light microscopy. Considering the length of time of the disease's existence and the age of the patients the development of atrophy of the gastric mucosa is not considered as an inevitable complication of the disease. At the same time when examining the gastric juice, decreased basal acid secretion was found in almost each case even in those showing normal histological pattern. Direct immunfluorescence examination of the biopsy samples revealed immunopthological alteration in the majority of cases. Histological changes were found to occur in the duodenum at a rate similar to that in the stomach. The results refer to the systemic character of the disease.
