The cardioprotective effects of three indigenous drugs, viz. Inula racemosa, Saussurea lappa clarke and Terminalia arjuna have been assessed in isoproterenol induced myocardial ischaemia in rabbits. A total of 35 healthy Belgian strain rabbits weighing 1-1.5 kg were randomly divided in 5 groups (group A-E) of 7 each. Group A served as control while group B animals were treated with isoproterenol on day 91 and 92. Group C, D and E animals were pretreated with 500 mg dried powder of I. racemosa, S. lappa clarke and T. arjuna orally twice daily for 90 days. Thereafter, myocardial ischaemia was produced by slow iv infusion of isoprenaline sulphate. The ischaemia was confirmed by electrocardiographic and serum enzyme changes. Histopathological examination was also made to further confirm the myocardial necrosis. In rabbits pretreated with I. racemosa and T. arjuna the onset of ischaemia was significantly delayed and severity less pronounced as compared to controls. T. arjuna was found to be better cardioprotective drug among the two.
