The effectiveness of traditionally used drugs for limiting infarct size was assessed in the presence of restored coronary blood flow following coronary arterial occlusion. Following occlusion and reperfusion of their left coronary arteries, 40 rats were administered either verapamil or nitroglycerin. The area of necrosis was then studied. Verapamil was found to have a positive effect on the size of reperfusion damage to the myocardium, while nitroglycerin was found to have no beneficial effect.
