The presence of sialic acids in the epimastigote forms of T. cruzi strain Tulahuen was demonstrated using the Warren reaction and the superscript 3H-wheat germ agglutinin technique. It is concluded that an important fraction of the total sialic acid content is exposed at the cell surface of T. cruzi. These sugars are mainly bound to non-polar or low-polar molecules, suggesting that they are integral components of cell membranes.
