Sensitization of Pigs with 3-Carene

Three young boars were sensitized by daily paintings on the belly with undiluted 3-carene which had been kept in ampoules at -15°C. After 8 paintings erythema and desquamation were provoked in all animals. When sensitivity had been provoked in the inguinal area and on the ear after 2 weeks by using a newly-made preparation, all 3 animals had erythematous-papular reactions with desquamation, infiltration and rhagades. Histologic signs of intraepithelial vesicle formation and cell infiltration in stratum papillare were observed. After transfer of the sensitivity, using thymus and spleen cells, an erythematous-papular reaction was observed after 24 hours in 2 previously untreated pigs. The histologic picture showed an intracellular and partially intercellular edema in the epithelium and in the upper part of the corium. Enlarged hyperemic capillaries and a moderate perivascular cell infiltration with a considerable number of eosinophils were demonstrated. An undiluted 3-carene solution gave no irritative reactions after painting of healthy human.
