Four patients are described in whom instillation of formalin into hepatic hydatid cysts resulted in biliary sclerosis. 2 of the patients died as a result of this complication. In another, the sclerosis was confined to the extrahepatic biliary tree and was treated successfully by hepatodocho-jejunostomy. The remaining patient had generalized biliary sclerosis, but remained well and was not jaundiced. It is recommended that formalin is no longer used to treat this condition.
