Indian childhood cirrhosis and cryoglobulinemia

Cryoglobulinemia was observed in 32% patients with Indian Childhood Cirrhosis (ICC) compared to 4% age matched controls. Mixed cryoglobulinemia containing IgM, IgG, IgA, was observed in 5 patients. A monotypic response comprising of IgG alone was observed in 2 patients and IgM alone in one. complement (C3) was present in the cryoprecipitate in 2 patients. The amount of cryoprecipitate was greater in patients with advanced disease. These observations support the stimulation of humoral immune limb in ICC. Earlier immunological observations also indicated a similar process. Cryoglobulins may be an epiphenomenon or might have a pathogenetic role in ICC.
