Serum and CSF magnesium levels in patients with Indian childhood cirrhosis

Twenty-three children with Indian childhood cirrhosis in various stages of hepatic dysfunction and 5 normal children in the same age group were studied for their serum and CSF Mg levels. CSF Mg levels in normal children were higher than the corresponding levels in serum but the differences were not significant. Both serum and CSF Mg showed significant reduction in patients with Indian childhood cirrhosis during the intermediate and late stage of the disease. Whereas during the late stage serum Mg levels were further reduced in patients with coma, CSF Mg levels were comparable in patients with and without coma.
