Diets very low in energy (300 to 800 kcal daily) are reasonably safe and effective in obtaining significant weight loss for obese persons when used as part of a comprehensive programme given under close medical supervision. Long-term maintenance of the loss is difficult to maintain. The use of appetite suppressants may be a suitable means of maintaining weight loss after the target weight is achieved. Most programmes rely on frequent follow-up, behaviour modification and continued physical exercise to maintain weight loss.
