Mechanism of stimulated D-xylose transport in spermine-grown R. glutinis cells was studied by monitoring temperature dependence of sugar uptake rate. In addition, release of bound intracellular Ca2+ into free state and stimulation of S-xylose uptake by spermine and Ca2+ were studied. The findings suggested that the sugar carrier molecule on the plasma membrane was modified by spermine binding. The modified carrier had lower energy of activation and was thus responsible for increased rate of D-xylose transport.
